The question most asked by friends, suppliers and clients is "How did you
get into tanning exotic leathers?"
In the summer of 1980 our parent firm, Plott Hide and Fur Co., Inc., began looking at ways to diversify. Having been in the raw skin trading business since 1923
we wanted to remain in the same field. A natural kindred line was the installation of a reptile
tannery, and so American Tanning and Leather Company was born.
Integrity, customer service and remarkably outstanding products, the same
business principles that created the success of our raw skin division, were
immediately adopted. In order to achieve success in our new venture we realized that we must provide clients
something more than they were getting. This we have done through intense product research
and development. Our leathers have been readily accepted all over the world and we continue to
grow in our number of satisfied repeat customers.
We are set apart from our competitors by being a stone's throw away from
Louisiana and Florida, home of the American alligator, and a fresh steady supply of raw
material from which we develop our luxurious leathers. Our staff searches the tropical regions of
the world to select the best raw tinga, crocodile, python and other exotic skins.
We have developed a modern tannery in Griffin which occupies in excess of
80,000 square feet and employs in excess of 30 persons each of whom are dedicated
to making the finest quality leathers possible. Finally, we dispatch our staff to major leather exhibitions in the United
States, Asia and Europe to insure that we are abreast of the latest techniques in processing,
dyeing, finishing and
to provide our clients with the latest fashion colors, trends and ideas.
